Stampede Kills Many in Lagos During Customs Rice Sales

An unspecified number of people have been reported dead in Lagos while trying to buy the seized rice the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) is selling to the public.

It was gathered that the stampede occurred due to poor crowd management and control, killing no fewer than seven people during the sales of the rice at Customs Zonal Office at Harvey Road, Yaba, Lagos on Friday.

An official of the NCS, who acknowledged the chaotic scene at the venue of the rice sales, attributed it to “impatience with laid-down procedures”.

He assured that the incident would be investigated to avoid future recurrence.
Customs had on Friday commenced the sale of seized rice to vulnerable members of the public at the price of N10,000 per 25kg bag to cushion the economic hardship facing Nigerians.
