…As EWAN host summit
Minister of education, Tunji Alausa, industry leaders, policymakers, are set to examine Nigeria’s growing obsession with paper qualifications and its impact on the integrity of public examinations.
This all important national dialogue will be achieved during the 2025 Education Writers Association of Nigeria (EWAN) Summit in Lagos.
The EWAN Summit with the Theme ‘Nigeria’s Obsession with Paper Qualification and Integrity of Public Examinations: Is TVET the Way Forward?’, aims to spark deep conversations about shifting from certificate chasing to genuine skills acquisition.
Speaking ahead of the summit, Iyabo Lawal, Chairperson, planning committee, said EWAN is committed not only to reporting on education, but also to engaging policymakers to drive reforms.
Iyabo said that the surge in examination malpractices may be linked to Nigeria’s certificate-driven culture, an issue the summit aims to confront through critical national dialogue.
The sixth edition of the EWAN summit will see the Education Minister, Tunji Alausa, deliver the keynote address, which is expected to set the tone for national reflections on strengthening skills-based education.
The summit scheduled for Thursday, November 27, at the Julius Berger Auditorium, University of Lagos (UNILAG), will also focus on how Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) can offer a sustainable solution to Nigeria’s certificate-driven culture.
The committee chairperson further said that the summit will assemble key figures from the education, manufacturing, and technical sectors, all expected to deliberate on the credibility of public examinations and the future direction of Nigeria’s education system.
A major highlight will be the appraisal of the Minister’s keynote by the heads of top examination bodies. These include JAMB Registrar, Is-haq Oloyede; WAEC Head of National Office, Amos Dangut; and NECO Registrar/CEO, Ibrahim Wushishi, among others.
Beyond examinations, the summit will explore how TVET can help address Nigeria’s persistent unemployment and skills gap. Contributions will come from the Executive Secretary of NBTE, Idris Bugaje; LASTVEB’s Executive Secretary, Morounke Azeez; and representatives of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN).
Hosting the event is Folasade Ogunsola, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), while Abdullahi Ribadu, Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), will be the chief host.
The Chairman of the occasion will be Olawunmi Gasper, former LASTVEB Executive Secretary.
The summit will also feature two panel sessions and an awards segment honouring institutions and personalities who have made remarkable contributions to public education in Nigeria.
Those to be recognised include Emeritus Professor, Michael Omolewa, to be honoured as an Icon of Education, and Kesington Adebutu, celebrated for his philanthropic investments in public education through donations and endowments.
Additionally, the Nigerian Breweries–Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund and Babcock University’s outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Ademola Tayo, will receive awards for their support for teachers, schools, and EWAN’s programmes over the past decade.
